Students at SIU Paris will be participating in Fall Convocation 2016 Friday, September 30th at the American Cathedral in Paris. This is the occasion to mark the beginning of the Fall 2016 Term, and guest speakers will include Javed Hamid, Member of the Board of Trustees of Schiller International University and former Director of the East Asia and Pacific Region branch of the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Mr. Javed Hamid has been involved in some of the most important investment strategies in that institution’s history: furthering China’s transition to a market economy, leading the financial structuring strategy in the wake of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, opening up the IFC’s first Asian offices, and spearheading the IFC’s first-ever investments in education, to name but a few key moments.

We recently had a chance to talk with alumna Elise Montchanin who graduated from Schiller International University Paris Campus with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy. She gives us some of her reflections on her own international career.
SIU: Could you tell us a little bit about your current position?
EM: I am currently the Regional Security Adviser for IDLO, the International Development Law Organization (headquartered in Rome). I am in charge of the various countries in Africa where IDLO operates, mainly Somalia, Kenya, South Sudan, Mali with Tanzania and Liberia coming up soon. I have been working for IDLO since April 2014 ensuring the safety and security of staff implementing IDLO’s programs.
SIU: What have been some of your professional accomplishments since you graduated from Schiller International University?
EM: After Schiller I joined the French army, specifically the Gendarmerie, which had always been a dream. I spent 18 years in the army, I did missions for the Department of Peacekeeping Operation (DPKO) for 6 years and was deployed in Kosovo, Haiti and Chad. I also worked 3 years for the World Food Program (WFP) as a security officer training all WFP staff in Africa.
SIU: How did the Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy at SIU prepare you for your career?
EM: After I graduated from Schiller I joined the French army as mentioned staying more than 18 years. I was quite an atypical member of the army since I was the only one in my units to have a university degree. Having this educational background enabled me to be selected as one of the first female Gendarmes to be deployed overseas for DPKO and work for the United Nations for about 9 years in various countries. A Bachelor of Arts degree, with work experience, or a Master’s degree is now considered one of the main requirements in order to apply for international security jobs. My BA in International Relations and Diplomacy and my English proficiency have always been assets both when I was in the army and in the world of international development: it has helped me succeed at the international level.
SIU: Thank you, Elise! It’s a real pleasure to talk with an alumna who has pursued a career in international settings and whose accomplishments inspire our students today.

Schiller Paris will be sending a delegation of students to a dinner-conference with S.E.Mme Veronika Wand-Danielsson, Ambassador of Sweden to France, who will be giving a talk on “Brexit and the European Union from the Swedish perspective”. The dinner takes place Tuesday, September 20 at the Restaurant of the Senate, Palais du Luxembourg, in Paris. Organized by IRCE, attendees at the dinner-conference will include members of the French Senate, business leaders, journalists and policy-makers from European institutions. For Schiller Paris’s contingent of Swedish students, this will be a memorable event! Students enrolled in the international relations and diplomacy program who attend will also have a front row seat to hear top diplomatic voices give their take on the most important political development in Europe in recent memory: the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union following the June 23 referendum
Having lived and studied in different countries, Ambassador Wand-Danielsson has a background many Schiller Paris students will find familiar. She thus brings a perspective enriched by many years working in an international setting. Initially schooled at the Institut Montaigne in Cotonou, Bénin, she completed her baccalauréat in Oslo before doing her undergraduate studies in political science at the University of Uppsala. She studied at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris and was later awarded a PhD in political science from the University of Stockholm. She began her career at the OECD focusing on topics related to public aid to southern African countries. Later, she held positions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sweden, the United Nations and the European Commission. She headed the Working Party on the Western Balkans Region (COWEB) during the Swedish presidency of the EU in 2001. She was the Swedish ambassador to NATO from 2007 to 2014 and since 2014 has been the Ambassador of Sweden to France and Monaco.
