University of Roehampton (UoR)

Manuel Alonso, SIU President, & Paul O’Prey, UoR Vice-ChancellorSchiller International University (SIU) and the University of Roehampton (UoR) in London have signed an agreement where students will study for a degree awarded by Roehampton alongside their Schiller degree and receive two separate qualifications by completing extra Roehampton-specific credits. A student from anywhere in the world studying with Schiller will earn an accredited US degree recognized in any country that accepts US degrees and a British degree recognized across the European Union, the Commonwealth plus countries including Russia, Turkey, Norway, Switzerland and other signatories of the Bologna Accords.

Students who register for a program which will allow them to study towards a Schiller degree and a separate Roehampton degree, will have to complete a number of modules/credits which will count towards both degrees, as well as specific modules/credits that fulfil the requirements for either the Schiller or the Roehampton qualifications. These include a dissertation or thesis which must be completed for a student to be eligible for the Roehampton degree.

About the University of Roehampton

University of RoehamptonThe University’s origins lies in the mid-19th century, with the establishment of four teacher training colleges that came together to establish the Roehampton Institute in 1975. Later, the Institute was granted University status and continues to be strongly supported by the four providing bodies which founded the colleges: the Church of England, the Methodist Church, the Froebel Trust, and the Roman Catholic Society of the Sacred Heart.

This unique history continues to determine the character and ethos of the University. Today its portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programs encompasses business, the arts and humanities, life and social sciences. The University has a very strong research profile, with some of the highest regarded academic departments in the UK. A third of research at the University has been judged as internationally excellent, while Dance and Biological Anthropology, are both considered amongst the very best in the country.

Roehampton’s academic staff publish regularly, in book form and academic journals, as well as being quoted by the British and international media as experts in their fields.

Some 10,000 students attend the University of Roehampton, a quarter of whom are postgraduates. There is a cosmopolitan atmosphere on campus, which is 20 minutes from central London, with more than 140 different nationalities studying at the University, reflecting its growing international reputation.

The British Quality System

In the UK, higher education institutions are independent, self-governing bodies active in teaching, research and scholarship and are established by Royal Charter or legislation.

The types of qualifications awarded by higher education institutions at undergraduate and postgraduate level are described in the Framework for Higher Education. The FHEQ was self-certified as compatible with the Framework for Qualifications of the European Higher Education Area, the qualifications framework adopted as part of the Bologna Process, in February 2009. Regarding the credit system, the Higher Education Credit Framework, was launched in 2008. This system is compatible with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) for accumulation and transfers within the European Higher Education Area.

Standards and quality in institutions are underpinned by the universal use of external examiners and moderators, a standard set of indicators and other reports, by the activities of the QAA (established in 1997 as an independent body to monitor and advise on standards and quality in UK higher education) and in professional areas by relevant professional, statutory and regulatory bodies. This ensures that institutions meet national expectations described in the subject benchmark statements, the Code of Practice and programme specifications; all developed by the QAA. The QAA conducts peer-review based audits and reviews of higher education institutions with the opportunity for subject-based review as the need arises. The accuracy and adequacy of quality related information published by the higher education institutions is also reviewed.

As you can see, the QAA is for the University of Roehampton the same the ACICS is for Schiller. All SIU programs have to be audited by the ACICS and by the QAA.
